Demonstratives: dieser, der, derselbe

dieser (this, that) is declined like the definite article: the last letter of der / die / das / dem / den / des turns up at the end of dies-. Same pattern for jeder (each, every), welcher (which), mancher (many a), jener (that one, written) and alle (plural).

• der, die, das as a pronoun (this one, he, she): very common in speech, at the start of the sentence. Same forms as the article, except dative plural denen and genitive dessen / deren. Den Film? Den finde ich super.
• Das ist / Das sind: here das never changes; the verb agrees: Das sind meine Eltern (Those are my parents).
• derselbe, dieselbe, dasselbe (the same): one word, both parts are declined: mit demselben Bus. After a contraction: im selben Haus.
• so ein / solch- (such a): so ein schönes Wetter (spoken), solches Wetter (written).

I like this jacket.

Kennst du Peter? Ja, der wohnt neben mir.

Do you know Peter? Yes, he lives next door to me.

Wir wohnen im selben Haus.

We live in the same building.
