Passé composé: avoir or être, and agreement

Passé composé = avoir or être in the present + past participle (parlé, fini, vendu, pris, fait, été, eu).

Être is used with verbs of movement or change of state (aller, venir, arriver, partir, entrer, sortir, monter, descendre, naître, mourir, rester, tomber, devenir) and with all reflexive verbs (se lever).

• With être, the participle agrees with the subject: Elle est partie.
• With avoir, it agrees only with a direct object placed before it: Les clés ? Je les ai prises.
