The infinitive: go, cho, la, z, für z and am … sii

go / cho: in the Perfekt, people often keep only go, without gange: I bi go poschte (I went shopping).

la (lassen) is also repeated before the infinitive: Er laht s Auto la flicke (he's having the car repaired). aafo (to start) takes nothing or z: Es fangt aa rägne.

z = zu: Es isch schwirig z verstah. With a separable verb, z goes in the middle: aazlüüte, ufzstah. für z = um zu (in order to): I spare für z reise. ohni z = ohne zu (without).

am + infinitive + sii = to be doing something right now (like English -ing): I bi am Choche (I'm cooking). Very common in speech.

Mir sind geschter go schwümme.

Yesterday we went swimming.

I ha vergässe aazlüüte.

I forgot to call.

I spare für z reise.

I'm saving up to travel.

Momänt, i bi am Telefoniere.

Just a moment, I'm on the phone.
