Negation: nicht, kein and where nicht goes

kein negates a noun that would have ein or no article (it's declined like ein): "no / not a / not any". nicht negates everything else: verb, adjective, adverb, name, noun with der / mein / dieser.

Where does nicht go?

• To negate the whole sentence: nicht goes towards the end, after objects and time, but before: the 2nd part of the verb (Ich habe ihn nicht gesehen), the separable particle (Ich rufe dich nicht an), the adjective or noun after sein (Das ist nicht teuer), place or direction (Ich fahre nicht nach Bern), the verb's prepositional object (Ich warte nicht auf dich), adverbs of manner (Er fährt nicht schnell).
• To negate one element only: nicht goes right in front of it, often with sondern (but rather): Ich fahre nicht heute, sondern morgen.
• No double negatives: Ich habe nichts gesehen (not "nicht nichts"). Other negative words: nie, niemand, nichts, nirgends, weder … noch.

doch = "yes (I do / it is)!": the positive answer to a negative question.

Ich habe das Buch noch nicht gelesen.

I haven't read the book yet.

Er trinkt keinen Alkohol mehr.

He doesn't drink alcohol any more.

Aren't you hungry? Yes, I am!
