Perfekt: haben or sein?

The vast majority of verbs form the Perfekt with haben. You use sein with verbs without an accusative object that express:

Why? With these verbs the subject is somewhere else or in another state afterwards: after « ich bin gegangen » I'm gone. With haben, the subject has done something. Reflexive verbs and modal verbs always take haben (ich habe mich gewaschen = I washed).

Same verb, two auxiliaries

If a verb of movement has an accusative object, it takes haben:

Ich bin nach Genf gefahren.

I went to Geneva (by car, by train).

Ich habe den Lieferwagen in die Garage gefahren.

I drove the van into the garage.

Was ist passiert?

What happened?

Er ist zu Hause geblieben.

He stayed at home.

In Switzerland, Austria and southern Germany, stehen, sitzen and liegen take sein: ich bin gestanden, ich bin gesessen. In the north: ich habe gestanden. Both are correct.
