Impersonal constructions: treba mi, sviđa mi se, hladno mi je, ima / nema

Many feelings are expressed with the person in the dative: “to me it is cold”.

• Hladno mi je. — I'm cold. Žao mi je. — I'm sorry. Dosadno mi je. — I'm bored. Svejedno mi je. — I don't mind. Past: Bilo mi je hladno.
• Sviđati se (to please): the thing liked is the subject, and the verb agrees with it: Sviđa mi se ovaj grad. Sviđaju mi se ovi gradovi. Film mi se svidio.
• Nedostajati (to be missing): Nedostaješ mi. — I miss you (literally “you are missing to me”). Fali mi novca. — I'm short of money.
• Trebati: Treba mi auto. — I need a car. (hr: Trebam auto.)
• Pain with the accusative: Boli me glava. — I have a headache. Bole me noge.
• Feeling like: dative + se + 3rd sing.: Spava mi se. — I feel sleepy. Ne ide mi se. — I don't feel like going.

Ima / nema + genitive = there is / there isn't. No subject, always neuter singular:

Nema ga. — He's not here. Ima li mlijeka? — Ima. — Is there any milk? — Yes.

Weather: Pada kiša. — It's raining. Pada snijeg. — It's snowing. Toplo je. — It's warm.
