werden is the most versatile verb in German. To understand a sentence, ask yourself which job it's doing:
| Job | Pattern | Perfekt | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| full verb « become » | werden + noun / adjective | ist … geworden | Er ist Ingenieur geworden. |
| future | werden + infinitive | — | Ich werde morgen kommen. |
| passive | werden + past participle | ist … worden | Die Brücke ist 1990 gebaut worden. |
| Konjunktiv II | würde + infinitive | — | Ich würde gern kommen. |
When werden is the main verb (« become »), its participle is normal: geworden. When werden is only the passive auxiliary, it drops its ge-: worden. It's a shortened form reserved for the auxiliary, a tool that steps back behind the real verb.
Es ist schon dunkel geworden.
It has already got dark.
Der Patient ist gestern operiert worden.
The patient was operated on yesterday.
Die Brücke ist renoviert worden und viel schöner geworden.
The bridge has been renovated and has become much nicer.
