|---|---|---|
| used to + base | past habit or state that is no longer true | I used to smoke. She used to live in Bern. |
| would + base | repeated past action (not states), in stories | Every summer we would go to the sea. |
| be used to + -ing / noun | be accustomed to | I'm used to getting up early. |
| get used to + -ing / noun | become accustomed to | You'll get used to the cold. |
Questions and negatives: did + use to (without -d): Did you use to play football? I didn't use to like coffee.
Trap: in “be / get used to”, to is a preposition, so it is followed by -ing: I'm used to working (not “to work”). With a state, only used to: I used to have long hair (not “would have”).
