Cuando el verbo introductor está en pasado (he said, she told me), el tiempo suele retroceder un paso — como en español:
| directo | indirecto |
|---|---|
| “I am tired.” | He said (that) he was tired. (Dijo que estaba cansado.) |
| “I'm working.” | She said she was working. (Dijo que estaba trabajando.) |
| “I saw it.” / “I've seen it.” | He said he had seen it. (Dijo que lo había visto.) |
| “I will call.” | She said she would call. (Dijo que llamaría.) |
| “I can help.” | He said he could help. (Dijo que podía ayudar.) |
| “You must go.” | She said I had to go. (Dijo que tenía que irme.) |
También cambian los pronombres y las palabras de tiempo / lugar: today → that day, tomorrow → the next day, yesterday → the day before, here → there, ago → before.
No hay retroceso si el verbo introductor está en presente (He says he is tired) o si el hecho sigue siendo cierto: She said she lives in Geneva (dijo que vive en Ginebra).
