Un phrasal verb es un verbo + una partícula (up, out, off, on, down…). El significado muchas veces no se puede adivinar a partir de las partes: apréndelos como palabras nuevas.
| phrasal verb | significado | ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| give up | rendirse, dejar | Don't give up! (¡No te rindas!) |
| find out | descubrir, enterarse | I found out the truth. (Descubrí la verdad.) |
| look after | cuidar de | She looks after her mother. (Cuida de su madre.) |
| look up | buscar (una palabra, un dato) | Look it up in the dictionary. (Búscalo en el diccionario.) |
| turn on / off | encender / apagar | Turn off the light. (Apaga la luz.) |
| get up | levantarse | I get up at six. (Me levanto a las seis.) |
| carry on | seguir, continuar | Carry on working. (Sigue trabajando.) |

| come across | encontrarse con, toparse con | I came across an old photo. (Me encontré una foto antigua.) |
Verbos separables (con complemento): el complemento puede ir en medio o al final — turn the light off / turn off the light. Pero un pronombre va obligatoriamente en medio: turn it off (no «turn off it»), pick me up (recógeme).
Verbos inseparables: nunca se separan: look after the children → look after them; come across it. Los verbos de tres partes son inseparables: run out of it, look forward to it.
