Clitics in practice, yes/no questions with li, and short answers

What counts as “1st position”?

Reminder of the order: li → sam / si / ću / bih… → dative → accusative → se → je: Dao si mi ga. Da li ti ga je dao? Sviđa li ti se? The negative forms (nisam, neću, nije) are not clitics and can start the sentence: Nije mi ga dao.

Two “je”: je (= her, accusative) + je (= is) becomes ju je: Vidio ju je. — He saw her.

Yes/no questions:

typeexample
verb + liImaš li vremena? Znaš li? Hoćeš li doći?
biti: long form + liJesi li gladan? Je li to tvoj auto? (never “si li”)
da li + sentenceDa li si gladan? Da li ćeš doći?
intonation onlyDolaziš? — Are you coming?

Short answers: repeat the verb rather than just “da / ne”: Jesi li gladan? — Jesam. / Nisam. Imaš li auto? — Imam. / Nemam. Možeš li doći? — Mogu. / Ne mogu.

Zar shows surprise: Zar ne znaš? — Don't you know? …, zar ne? — …, isn't it? / don't you?
